SCRAP was launched on the 23rd October 2013 at the RDC. The objective of SCRAP is to (hopefully) transform Sandakan residents into a waste-conscious society with effective waste management. We hope that in the years to come, Sandakan can be a model for community-driven waste management programme for Sabah.

However, in the early phase of SCRAP,  we plan to work with schools that have active EE programmes and with the Sepilok community.

Why SCRAP?

Sandakan has a population of about 453,500 people (base on 2010 record). The waste we generate is A LOT! Long-term education is the only way to educate the Sandakan community to reuse, reduce and recycle!

SCRAP in schools and tertiary education institutions

There are an increasing number of schools in Sandakan that have active EE programmes. We are working with selected schools to infuse the recycling ethics in the young. Sadly, we haven't been consistent with it as we do not have the funds for this. Thus, most of our activities are on an ad hoc basis.

SCRAP in Sepilok

Sepilok is known worldwide for the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabitation Centre (SOURC). In fact, Sepilok is synonymous with orang-utans in Sabah. That means Sepilok is one of the major tourist destinations in Sabah. However, there is rubbish along the main road to the SOURC, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, the RDC and to the various BnBs and lodges.

For a couple of years now, the Sepilok community have been cleaning up the road in Sepilok on a daily basis, taking turns to pick up the rubbish. Once a month, we pick up rubbish along the main road from Mile 12 to the Sepilok roundabout.
