Environmental Education Programmes
The Environmental Education Programmes (EEP) at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) are designed to inspire awareness, appreciation, and action for the natural world, focusing on the incredible biodiversity of Borneo’s rainforests. As one of Sabah’s foremost environmental education hubs, RDC offers a variety of engaging, hands-on learning experiences for students, educators, youth, and local communities.

Under EEP, the Environmental Education Activities (EEA) take school students into the rainforest for immersive, curriculum-based learning that connects classroom knowledge with real-world ecosystems. The Guided Educational Visits (GEV) provide insightful, guided tours for learners of all ages, while the Environmental Visits (EV) offer a flexible, self-directed way for groups to explore RDC’s trails, exhibits, and attractions at their own pace.

In addition to these programmes, RDC runs the Environmental Education Race (EERace), a flagship training event for teachers since 2007, which expanded in 2023 to include youth participants. This initiative strengthens environmental leadership and builds capacity for conservation education.
RDC also extends its impact beyond the centre through active outreach programmes. These include the Heart of Borneo (HoB) Roadshows, school and community engagement sessions, and public awareness campaigns focused on rainforest conservation and sustainability. A key community-driven initiative is the Sepilok Community Recycling Action Program (SCRAP), which promotes recycling and responsible waste management practices among local residents, schools, and businesses.

Together, these initiatives reflect RDC’s strong commitment to environmental education, community involvement, and conservation action, creating opportunities for people of all ages to connect with nature and become stewards of the environment.
